Today I set a game plan with Shakthi on how we’re going to tackle the next 6 weeks in the Pilbara.  I’ll need to:

• develop/find/improve on some curriculum for ‘object-based storytelling’
• develop/find/improve on curriculum to introduce the ‘craft’ of working with audio and photography
• develop online social network strategy for cultural leaders in the Pilbara

For the first week, we’re going to go to Marble Bar (population? 194) to do an ad-hoc community media class – completely open-ended, depending on who shows up an what they’d like to learn.  Could be storytelling, filming video, even djing if that’s what they want;)  Should be fun.  Main purpose is to introduce ourselves to the folks in Marble Bar to as well as connect them to the community media network we’re in the process of building.

Second week, we begin 5 weeks of work in Newman, culminating in a community festival.  One of our partners on the ground has already secured Thai dancers (WTF, in a rural mining colony in the middle of nowhere???), MCs and a space for the festival.

All this is of course, quite rough.  It’ll most likely evolve once we get out there.  In the meantime, please enjoy this lovely video of the CW office loft in Sydney.  In it, I give a nice tour of the CW art/office loft.  It’s truly one of the nicest spaces I’ve ever worked (and will hopefully play in soon!).

CuriousWorks were brought to Newman by Country Arts WA as part of the BHP Billiton Iron Ore – Legacy Project. The New Media Workshops were tailored to the interests of the group of young people who attended, and from this two main focus points were developed.

One was the creation of a Newman Community website! Developed by Lee Bell, 20, the website is created to be a hub for the local community to address local issues, inform young people and old, increade awareness of activities, promote local businesses, etc. If you haven’t already checked it out, go there now! The other focus of the workshops was training up a group of young people to become a filmmaking team! With Peta Lee at the helm, and strong creative input from Izac Armstrong, Anthony Jenssen and other young committed Newmanites, this small group of 10-15 year olds became a formidable production team! The first week was spent creating short pieces and learning the ropes (camera, sound, editing) while the second week focussed on creating larger works. Most notable of these is The Cave Crew, the first episode in a series which takes place in Newman. Watch it!

CuriousWorks will be returning to Newman in September & October to work with more folks from the area and to ensure that the young people’s skills are at a point where they can create their own videos and websites well into the future! See y’all then.

EXPERIENCE:
CuriousWorks is an innovative company with a diversely talented team. We are after someone with a diverse set of arts and media skills, but he/she must have an advanced video production skills base. Equally important is this person’s ability and commitment to keep learning, experimenting and documenting how new media, creativity and education can come together for the long-term, social benefit of the most disadvantaged communities in Australia.

JOB DETAILS:
In collaboration with other staff from CuriousWorks, this person will be leading new media workshops in mining and remote Indigenous communities in the Pilbara. This will be within CuriousWorks’ model for community collaboration, but there is plenty of room for you to bring in your own practice and this is encouraged. The emphasis will not be on you creating work, but you enabling arts media work to be created by young people from the region.

The job is in and around Newman, in the heart of the Pilbara, from 7 September to 5 November 2009. You will be paid $7,500 for this time. Your transport and accommodation will be taken care of for you. If this initial period goes well, there is a significant possibility of a full-time or permanent part-time role with CuriousWorks throughout 2010, based out of Western Australia, with a higher salary.

If you can only work for part of this period – not the whole 9 weeks – but have the requisite experience and interest, we are still interested in hearing from you.

The first stage is simply a one-page expression of interest, including a summary of any relevant previous experience, to shakthi@curiousworks.com.au. You may include website links in your expression of interest.

The EOI must be sent by 17th August, 2009.

The second stage will be a video interview in late August over Skype with Shakthidharan, Director of CuriousWorks, in Sydney.
