Newman New Media Workshops – Phase 1
July 30th, 2009 § 0
Newman, Western Australia. Yeah, I’d never heard of it before either. A mining town of 4000 people, founded in the 60s and surrounded by the arid plains of the Pilbara. In July, CuriousWorks spent 2 weeks working with a group of local young people to develop their New Media skills and give them a chance to represent themselves and their town to a global audience. » Read the rest of this entry «
Flick Movie Making Camp
July 23rd, 2009 § 1
From the 13th to the 16th of July, a group of 16 youth with cerebral palsy from all around Sydney came together at the CuriousWorks loft to take part in the first ever Flick Movie Making Camp. In partnership with the Spastic Centre, CuriousWorks supported the Flick crew through a lightning-paced process of technical training, concept development, scripting, shooting, and editing, which culminated in a screening for family and friends of the participants on the camp’s final day.
With remarkable dedication, and a degree of generosity towards each other’s contributions that is rarely seen in collaborative arts production endeavours, the Flick crew produced 3 short films in 4 short days: a hip-hop music video, an original song with images celebrating the value of family, and a post-apocalyptic zombie film. Flick’s significant accomplishments throughout their process highlight the error of any who may think that youth and Cerebral Palsy are conditions that restrict a group of empowered people’s ability to come together as a formidable media-making force.

Secrets of Sri Lanka: Make a Contribution to CuriousWorks' new creative project
July 22nd, 2009 § 0
CuriousWorks’ new arts project is about Sri Lanka – and I’m hoping that you can be a part of it.
Put simply, what do you wish for Sri Lanka’s future? If you could speak honestly – without fearing what others may think, with the lessons learned from the past, but without the baggage – what would you say?
We’re looking for simple contributions about Sri Lanka that the Australian public will be able to see, hear, taste, touch and smell. Send us something in the post. Leave a voicemail message. Think laterally. What image, item or sound could represent what you wish for Sri Lanka’s future?
I put this question particularly to the Sri Lankans reading this post – but also to anyone who has an interest in the pearl island. Your answers will be part of a touring installation and an ongoing website that reaches out to many parts of the Australian community and media. » Read the rest of this entry «
